Alterations

FAQ

What sets us apart from other Alteration places?

The difference resides mainly in the knowledge and skill level required to produce great results.

The staff at Hem Over Heels is always very carefully chosen to maintain the reputation of the store. Not everybody is able or willing to spend the time required to do an alteration the right way. Just like for restaurants, many people can be (or become) good cooks. But not all great cooks can merit the "Chef" title. Chefs are masters with sets of skills that puts them in a separate category. The same goes for seamstresses and tailors.

Hem Over Heels relies on people with masterful skills. They won't compromise on the results by lowering their standards to make an alteration more affordable. They will do it right, or they won't do it at all...

What kind of Alterations can we do?

From the simple seam repair or hole patching, all the way to major alterations on tuxedos and Wedding gowns, the professional staff at Hem Over Heels can do it all.

When we do the hem on a pairs of pants or on a dress, we do it the same way as the original unless you specifically request it to be done a different way. When we take in the waist on ladies' clothes, we do not create darts like so many others do unless it is a necessity. We take the waist band apart, shorten it/ let it out the proper way and reset the waist band on the garment seamlessly. This will always be the preferred way. But sometimes, it is better to do darts to produce the desired fit. If the experts propose it, it will be done the right way.

Many times, we are asked to repair the bad work done by some pretenders out there. When an alteration isn't done right, a garment can become very uncomfortable to wear. If we alter your clothes, it will be done right so that it looks right and feels right.

What is it that we can't do?

We can't give you a price over the phone, by text messages or in an email. This is the most common question we are being asked every day.

We can't be specific because we need to see the garments and the way it fits you first. We will not know how much work we need to do until we see it on you. Each piece is analyzed inside and out to figure all the steps that will be required to do the work.

The presence (or absence) of a lining, the width of a dress, the presence of pleats or slits or cuffs... all factors into the pricing.

Even if you insist for us to give you a ballpark figure (a price estimate) we will not cooperate. We received bad reviews in the past because people insisted for us to give them a ballpark estimate over the phone. When taking everything into consideration, the answer can sound quite sarcastic. "Anywhere between $20 and $400..." could easily be the answer we give. Potential customers will take that answer the wrong way and get frustrated because they think we are not trying to help. Most will take it as an insult. But it is the furthest from our intentions. Despite our resistance and warning about our forced answers, our reputation is still being attacked by callers who just don't get it... They just won't understand and they just want revenge for their frustration.

We will not compromise on the quality of our alterations by doing it the wrong way. We are surrounded by dry cleaners that provide some level of alteration services. For the most part, they charge less than we do for their services. That is fine with us. Because we don't do the same work they do. If you desire to have the cheapest place in town, we are not what you are looking for. But if you are looking for above average/top notch alterations, we are exactly who you are looking for. In other words, please do not ask us to do it at the same price as the people next door, we simply will not do it.

We can't do it for yesterday. But in some cases, we may be able to help you with some "same day service". We need to see if we can insert your items into our load of work without penalizing the customers who have been waiting for close to a week already...

We will not go jump off the bridge, even if you beg us to do it..

How long does it take us to do the work?

All work is typically done within one week. Depending on the time of year, the turn around time will vary greatly. In the summer months, we normally have less work coming in. But this is also the time when some of the staff members will take some time off...

That being said, please don't presume we won't be able to accommodate you if you are in need of an emergency alteration. Give us a quick call, or even better, come on in to show us what you need, we'll be able to tell you if we can help you when we see the work involved.

There will be "Rush Fees" for "Same Day" or "The Day After" orders. Those fees are established according to the amount of work involved in the order
