Cut hem

$17+

Even if it is only cut doesn't mean it is cheaper. Since there is no room for error, we need to be extremely cautious with those types of garments. We need to measure three times for us to only cut once... Extra wide legs may influence the price.

Hem w/ elastics, zippers or cords

$30+

Some details about the garments construction may influence the prices

Jeans regular hem (same way)

$17+

Basic hem always done with the same distance and color thread from the edge as original unless you request it any other way.

(This version is mostly used on dark blue jeans or white denim pants where the discoloration is minimal) Wider legs may influence the price.

Jeans invisible hem

$30+

Jeans hem with pronounced discoloration of the denim will benefit a lot by choosing this option to preserve the integrity of the original look. Putting a basic jeans hem on that type of pants is almost sacrilegious unless you don't care about the looks. A regular hem will jump at your eyes as an anomaly that will betray your lack of taste in fashion.

This is the best option if you sometimes roll your hem up when you walk along the beach because it has a clean look inside and out...

It is the cleanest version but it is a tiny bit thicker than the reattached version with the inner fabric lip. (It may be the only option for some reattached hems. It is a little bit more expensive but it is truly worth it. Please follow your seamstress recommendations).

Shorts hem

$22+

When a hem is done on shorts, tapering of the leg is required in order for the hem to lay right. The seamstress will see how much tapering is needed and may adjust the price accordingly

Cargo Shorts hem

$25+

When a hem is done on cargo shorts, we are limited by the presences of pockets. Tapering of the legs may also be an issue during the hemming process. The seamstress will be able to tell you what sh can do and adjust the price accordingly.

For a simple dress/skirt (no lining) with one slit. Price may be adjusted if there are 2 slits or the length of the slits requires more work. How ample the garment is will also affect the price.

Basic hem w/ slit and lining

$55+

A dress/skirt with one slit and a lining usually is a bit more complex. The presence of a slit usually means that the lining need to be attached around that slit for it no to show. Exact price will be determined when we see how the garment is constructed.

Waist & Seat

Men's waist and seat

$25+

Most dress pants have enough extra fabric to allow extension of the waistband.

Ladies' waist and seat

$30+

When it comes to ladies garments, we do it the right way. We do not take shortcuts by creating painful and ugly darts. We take the whole waistband apart and put it back together so that it fits you the right way.

Jeans waist and seat

$35+

Jeans waist are extra difficult to alter. First, there is no way to let anything out. Manufacturers don't leave extra fabric in the seams (that would be very uncomfortable to wear). The denim dye is also meant to wash off with time. Therefore the color of the denim inside those seams are usually much darker than the exposed fabric. That is another reason they can't be let out. We are also limited in the amount we can take them in. If we push it too far. The back pockets come too close together on the back and it doesn't look right. We can take it from the sides but we are limited there too. When the seamstress sees how much needs to be taken in, we strongly suggest you listen to her advise if she tells you not to do it. Price is also higher on denim because it is double seams everywhere.

Sleeves for Jackets, Shirts & Tops

Plain jacket sleeves w/ lining

$45+

Most simple sleeve style with lining. There is no opening (vent). Some of these jackets come with buttons and some others are plain.

Jacket sleeves w/ buttons

$50+

Most jackets come with that type of sleeves. Make sure you look at the way the buttons are stitched when you bring it in, Some buttons just kiss one another, some are separated but some are also stacked. We stitch them back the same way they came in unless you request it done differently.

Jacket sleeves w/ fake button holes

$55+

This is the style where the buttons are stitched on top of an embroidered button hole to give the illusion of a functional vent. To shorten sleeves, we need to remove those embroiderieThis is the style where the buttons are stitched on top of an embroidered button hole to give the illusion of a functional vent. To shorten sleeves, we need to remove those embroideries. If you want them back, we can do it if you request it.

Jacket sleeves w/ real button holes

$90+

These sleeves can't be shortened the easy way. In order to do it, we need to raise the sleeve from the shoulder. It is a lot more work but it is the only way. There is a maximum amount that can be shortened using this option. The seamstress will determine the steps to take to tackle this problem.

Dress shirt w/ cuffs & plaquets

$35+

When we shorten the sleeves on dress shirts, we move the the whole cuff and the vent up so that it looks exactly the same. If shortening is minimal, we may be able to just move the cuff up reducing the vent length a little bit. But it may not always be possible.

Short sleeves (T-shirts, polo shirts and casual shirt)

$25+

Plain short sleeves are $25. If we need to create cuffs or slits or if we need to reattach an elastic cuff on the sleeves, the price will vary according to the work involved.

FAQ

What sets Hem Over Heels apart from other Alteration places?

The difference resides mainly in the knowledge and skills required to produce great results.

The staff at Hem Over Heels is always very carefully chosen to maintain the reputation of the store. Not everybody is able or willing to spend the time required to do an alteration the right way. Just like the restaurant business, many people can be good Cooks. But not all great Cooks can be called Chefs. Chefs are masters with skills that sets them apart. The same goes for Seamstresses and Tailors.

Hem Over Heels relies on Masters' skills. They won't compromise on the results by lowering their standards to make an alteration more affordable. They will do it right, or they won't do it at all...

What kind of Alterations can we do?

Men's formal wear

From the simple seam repair or hole patching, all the way to major alterations on men's suit jackets or Wedding gowns, the professional staff at Hem Over Heels can do it all.

When we do the hem on a pairs of pants or on a dress, we do it the same way as the original unless you specifically request it to be done a different way. When we take in the waist on ladies' clothes, we don't just do darts like so many others do. We take the waist band apart, shorten it/ let it out the proper way and reset the waist band on the garment seamlessly. This will always be the preferred way. But sometimes, it is better to do darts to produce the desired fit. If the experts propose it, it will be done the right way.

Many times, we are asked to repair the bad work done by pretenders. When an alteration isn't done right, a garment can become very uncomfortable to wear when it is done the wrong way. If we alter your clothes, it will be done right so that it looks right and feels right.

What is it that we can't do?

We can't give you a price over the phone, by text messages or in an email. This is the most common question we are being asked every day.

We can't be specific because we need to see the garments and the way it fits you first. We will not know how much work we need to do until we see it on you. Each piece is analyzed inside and out to figure all obstacles we will need to face to do the work required.

The presence or absence of a lining, the width of a dress, the presence of pleats or slits or cuffs... all elements that factors into the pricing of any given alterations.

Even if you insist and ask us to give you a ballpark figure, we will not do it. We even received a bad review once because somebody called in to ask for a ballpark price figure. When taking everything into consideration, the answer to her was "somewhere between $20 and $400. That potential customer took that as an insult. It was the furthest of our intentions but we still had to pay with a bad mark on our reputation because we dared to be truthful...

Men's suit jackets

We will not compromise on the quality of our alterations by doing it the wrong way. We are surrounded by dry cleaners that provide some level of alteration services. For the most part, they charge less than we do for their services. That is fine with us. Because we don't do the same work they do. If you desire to have the cheapest place in town, we are not what you are looking for. But if you are looking for above average/top notch alterations, we are exactly who you are looking for. In other words, please do not ask us to do it at the same price as the people next door, we simply will not do it.

We can't do it for yesterday. But in some cases, we may be able to help you with some "same day service". We need to see if we can insert your items into our load of work without penalizing the customers who have been waiting for close to a week already...

We will not go jump off the bridge, even if you beg us to do it..

How long do it take us to do the work?

Jacket sleeves alteration

All work is typically done within one week. Depending on the time of year, the turn around time will vary greatly. In the summer months, we normally have less work coming in. But this is also the time when some of the staff members will take some time off...

That being said, please don't presume we won't be able to accommodate you if you are in need of an emergency alteration. Give us a quick call, or even better, come on in to show us what you need, we'll be able to tell you if we can help you when we see the work involved.

There will be "Rush Fees" for "Same Day" or "The Day After" orders. Those fees are established according to the amount of work involved in the order
